Batangas Governor and Lipa City Representative Vilma Santos has proClaimed that she is against her colleagues voting for the massive reduction of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) budget to a mere ₱1,000 for the entirety of 2018.
According to a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Gov. Santos said that she is vehemently against the budget reduction “given the crimes and extrajudicial killings in the country.”
Her eldest son, Luis Manzano, posted Gov. Santos’ stance on the issue on Twitter. Vilma Santos said via her son’s tweet:
“[I] Am against cutting the budget of the CHR. They have a duty to perform as mandated by the constitution. With so much crimes/EJK – they need more resources to these investigations. Ito ang isang Ahensya na tumutulong sa karapatang pang tao!!”
Luis also defended his mother from a particular netizen who Claimed that she voted for the budget reduction. The host emphasized that she was not present when the House of Representatives voted on the CHR’s drastic budget reduction on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.
Luis clarified in a tweet:
“First, my mom is against the 1k budget of the CHR. Second, she wasn’t able to vote since she was about to be confined and was/is under meds.”
At least 119 lawmakers voted for the CHR’s budget to be reduced to a measly ₱1,000 after House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez threatened to reduce the commission’s budget to zero for supposedly “always criticizing” the duterte regime.
In a report published by GMA News Online, Vilma Santos was revealed to have suffered an ulcer attack on the day that Congress voted to drastically reduce the CHR budget. The ulcer nearly forced Gov. Santos to be confined to a hospital.
